On pickup day, the driver inspects your vehicle and records its condition on a Bill of Lading - the same document you'll both sign at delivery to confirm the vehicle arrived in the same condition it left in. Star Auto Shipping arranges vehicle transport through independent FMCSA-registered motor carriers that physically transport vehicles.
What Affects Vehicle Shipping Pricing
Auto transport pricing is driven mainly by distance - longer routes cost more in total but less per mile. Beyond distance, price is affected by vehicle size and weight (a full-size truck costs more to ship than a compact sedan), transport type (enclosed carriers cost more than open trailers due to lower capacity per load), pickup and delivery locations, including how easily a carrier can access each location, the season (snowbird routes get busier and pricier in fall and spring), and whether the vehicle is operable, since non-running vehicles require a winch and extra loading time.
Open vs. Enclosed Transport
Open auto transport moves vehicles on an open carrier and is available for many standard vehicle-shipping needs. Open carriers transport vehicles without an enclosed trailer, so vehicles remain exposed to normal road and weather conditions during transit. Enclosed transport carries your vehicle inside a fully covered trailer, shielding it from weather and road debris. We recommend enclosed transport for classic cars, exotic and luxury vehicles, or any car where the extra protection is worth the added cost. Flatbed carriers are a third option for vehicles that can't be driven on or off a standard ramp, such as lowered or non-running cars.

Timelines depend on distance and route. Once a vehicle is picked up, a useful planning guideline is approximately 400–500 miles of carrier travel per day. Actual delivery timing depends on the route, pickup and delivery locations, traffic, weather, carrier scheduling, and other transport conditions. Pickup and delivery windows are estimates rather than guarantees, since carriers are also subject to weather, traffic, and other shipments already on their route - booking a few days ahead of your target ship date gives carriers more flexibility to hit your preferred window.
